For theatre lovers everywhere, a trip to the world famous Minack is a must-see for visitors to Cornwall. Based in Porthcurno, think Lands’ End and you’re not too far off, the Minack is an open-air theatre that’s carved into the granite cliff. Overlooking some of the finest views over Cornwall, here’s a chance to enjoy a production in a unique setting. The back story of how the theatre came about is almost as fascinating as attending a performance so look out for daytime tours too.
The Minack Theatre
Whilst the Minack moulds itself to the look of an ancient Greek theatre, you’d perhaps be surprised to learn that it’s actually under 100 years old. Built by Rowena Cade, with the assistance of her dedicated gardener, they brought about a stunning transformation of this rugged headland. With an initial purchase of £100 made soon after World War I, the Minack Theatre has proved a popular destination for visitors ever since.

The Minack Theatre
Upon taking up residence in Cornwall, Rowena Cade quickly become involved in local events including amateur dramatics. She initially began by offering up her cliff-top garden to host performances of The Tempest. From here, an idea was conceived that ultimately led to the creation of the Minack theatre, perched on top the rugged cliffs of the Cornwall peninsular. This spectacular setting now plays host to a range of performances from Shakespearean plays, music & dance interpretations and children’s adaptations.
Now a popular destination, people around the world flock to Porthcuro to experience the magic of the Minack. If you’re planning a visit, particularly during peak times, then it’s best to book as early to avoid disappointment. Performances vary throughout the season so worth checking out what interests you and then plan around it.
The good news is that, once you’ve purchased tickets, you can keep your costs down as parking is free and you’re welcome to pack a picnic to enjoy before the show or during the interval. Questions and Comments

I understand that dogs are not allowed when the performance is in progress we are a large family with a small dog is their anywhere where one of us can stand away from the performance while it is in progress regards
Hi Anthony, whilst dogs on short leads are welcome during visiting hours to the Minack theatre, unfortunately no dogs other than guide dogs are admitted to performances. It is a very tight space around the theatre so there is nowhere around the set where you could watch the show and supervise a dog – you would be refused admission, Liz
